"He's been starved, and he shan't be baked now...

"He's been starved, and he shan't be baked now he's deadI'll make him a shroud, and he shall be buried in the garden, and I'll never have another bird, never, my Pip! For I am too bad to own one," murmured Beth, sitting on the floor with her pet folded in her hands"The funeral shall be this afternoon, and we will all goNow, don't cry, BethyIt's a pity, but nothing goes right this week, and Pip has had the worst of the experimentMake the shroud, and lay him in my box, and after the dinner party, we'll have a nice little funeral," said Jo, beginning to feel as if she had undertaken a good deal
Leaving the others to console Beth, she departed to the kitchen, which was in a most discouraging state of confusionPutting on a big apron, she fell to work and got the dishes piled up ready for washing, when she discovered that the fire was out
"Here's a sweet prospect!" muttered Jo, slamming the stove door open, and poking vigorously among the cinders
Having rekindled the fire, she thought she would go to market while the water heatedThe walk revived her spirits, and flattering herself that she had made good bargins, she trudged home again, after buying a very young lobster, some very old asparagus, and two boxes of acid strawberriesBy the time she got cleared up, the dinner arrived and the stove was red-hotHannah had left a pan of bread to rise, Meg had worked it up early, set it on the hearth for a second rising, and miu miu bow bag forgotten itMeg was entertaining Sallie Gardiner in the parlor, when the door flew open and a floury, crocky, flushed, and disheveled figure appeared, demanding tartly
"I say, isn't bread `riz' enough when it runs over the pans?"
Sallie began to laugh, but Meg nodded and lifted her eyebrows as high as they would go, which caused the apparition to vanish and put the sour bread into the oven without further delayMarch went out, after peeping here and there to see how matters went, also saying a word of comfort to Beth, who sat making a winding sheet, while the dear departed lay in state in the domino boxA strange sense of helplessness fell upon the girls as the gray bonnet vanished round the corner, and despair seized them when a few minutes later Miss Crocker appeared, and said she'd come to dinnerNow this lady was a thin, yellow spinster, with a sharp nose and inquisitive eyes, who saw everything and gossiped about all she sawThey disliked her, but had been taught to be kind to her, simply because she was old and poor and had few friendsSo Meg gave her the easy chair and tried to entertain her, while she asked questions, critsized everything, and told stories of the people whom she knew
Language cannot describe the anxieties, experiences, and exertions which Jo underwent that morning, and the dinner she served up became a standing jokeFearing to ask any more advice, she did her best alone, and discovered that something fairy bag prada more than energy and good will is necessary to make a cookShe boiled the asparagus for an hour and wasgrieved to find the heads cooked off and the stalks harder than everThe bread burned black, for the salad dressing so aggravated her that she could not make it fit to earThe lobster was a scarlet mystery to her, but she hammered and poked till it was unshelled and its meagerproportions concealed in a grove of lettuce leavesThe potatoes had to be hurried, not to keep the asparagus waiting, and were not done at the lastThe blancmange was lumpy, and the strawberries not as ripe as they looked, having been skilfully `deaconed'
"Well, they can eat beef and bread and butter, if they are hungry, only it's mortifying to have to spend your whole morning for nothing," thought Jo, as she rang the bell half an hour later than usual, and stood, hot, tired, and dispirited, surveying the feast spread before Laurie, accustomed to all sorts of elegance, and Miss Crocker, whose tattling tongue would report them far and wide
Poor Jo would gladly have gone under the table, as one thing after another was tasted and left, while Amy giggled, Meg looked distressed, Miss Crocker pursed her lips, and Laurie talked and laughed with all his might to give a cheerful tone to the festive sceneJo's one strong point was the fruit, for she had sugared it well, and had a pitcher of rich cream to eat with itHer hot cheeks cooled a trifle, and she drew a cartier santos de cartier long breath as the pretty glass plates went round, and everyone looked graciously at the little rosy islands floating in a sea of creamMiss Crocker tasted first, made a wry face, and drank some water hastilyJo, who refused, thinking there might not be enough, for they dwindled sadly after the picking over, glanced at Laurie, but he was eating away manfully, though there was a slight pucker about his mouth and he kept his eye fixed on his plateAmy, who was fond of delicate fare, took a heaping spoonful, choked, hid her face in her napkin, and left the table precipitately
"Oh, what is it?" exclaimed Jo, trembling
"Salt instead of sugar, and the cream is sour," replied Meg with a tragic gesture
Jo uttered a groan and fell back in her chair, remembering that she had given a last hasty powdering to the berries out of one of the two boxes on the kitchen table, and had neglected to put the milk in the refrigeratorShe turned scarlet and was on the verge of crying, when she met Laurie's eyes, which would look merry in spite of his heroic effortsThe comical side of the affair suddenly struck her, and she laughed till the tears ran down her cheeksSo did everyone else, even `Croaker' as the girls called the old lady, and the unfortunate dinner ended gaily, with bread and butter, olives and fun
"I haven't strength of mind enough to clear up now, so we will sober ourselves with a funeral," said Jo, as they rose, and Miss Crocker chanel white purses made ready to go, being eager to tell the new story at another friend's dinner table
They did sober themselves for Beth's sakeLaurie dug a grave under the ferns in the grove, little Pip was laid in, with many tears by his tender-hearted mistress, and covered with moss, while a wreath of violets and chickweed was hung on the stone which bore his epitaph, composed by Jo while she struggled with the dinner
Here lies Pip March,
Who died the 7th of June;
Loved and lamented sore,
And not forgotten soon
At the conclusion of the ceremonies, Beth retired to her room, overcome with emotion and lobster, but there was no place of repose, for the beds were not made, and she found her grief much assuaged by beating up the pillows and putting things in orderMeg helped Jo clear away the remains of the feast, which took half the afternoon and left them so tired that they agreed to be contented with tea and toast for supper
Laurie took Amy to drive, which was a deed of charity, for the sour cream seemed to have had a bad effect upon her temperMarch came home to find the three older girls hard at work in the middle of the afternoon, and a glance at the closet gave her an idea of the success of one part of the experiment
Before the housewives could rest, several people called, and there was a scramble to get ready to see themThen tea must be got, errands done, and one or two necessary bits of sewing neglected until the last zucca spy fendi bag minute

To Jo I leave my breastpin, the one mended with sealing wax, also my bronze inkstand--she lost the cover--and my most precious plaster rabbit, because I am sorry I burned up her story
To Beth (if she lives after me) I give my dolls and the little bureau, my fan, my linen collars and my new slippers if she can wear them being thin when she gets wellAnd I herewith also leave her my regret that I ever made fun of old Joanna
To my friend and neighbor Theodore Laurence I bequeethe my paper mashay portfolio, my clay model of a horse though he did say it hadn't any neckAlso in return for his great kindness in the hour of affliction any one of my artistic works he likes, Noter Dame is the best
To our venerable benefactor MrLaurence I leave my purple box with a looking glass in the cover which will be nice for his pens and remind him of the departed girl who thanks him for his favors to her family, especially Beth
I wish my favorite playmate Kitty Bryant to have the blue silk apron and my gold-bead ring with a kiss
To Hannah I give the bandbox she wanted and all the patchwork I leave hoping she `will remember me, when it you see'
And now having disposed of my most valuable property I hope all will be satisfied and not blame the deadI forgive everyone, and trust we may all meet when the trump shall sound
To this will and testiment I set my hand and seal on this 20th day of Nov

The last name was written in pencil, and Amy explained that he was to rewrite it in ink and seal it up for her properly
"What put it into your head? Did anyone tell you about Beth's giving away her things?" asked Laurie soberly, as Amy laid a bit of red tape, with sealing wax, a taper, and a standish before him
She explained and then asked anxiously, "What about Beth?"
"I'm sorry I spoke, but as I did, I'll tell youShe felt so ill one day that she told Jo she wanted to give her piano to Meg, her cats to you, and the poor old doll to Jo, who would love it for her sakeShe was sorry she had so little to give, and left locks of hair to the rest of us, and her best love to GrandpaShe never thought of a will
Laurie was signing and sealing as he spoke, and did not look up till a great tear dropped on the paperAmy's face was full of trouble, but she only said, "Don't people put sort of postscripts to their wills, sometimes?"
"Yes, `codicils', they call them
"Put one in mine then, that I wish all my curls cut off, and given round to my friendsI forgot it, but I want it done though it will spoil my looks
Laurie added it, smiling at Amy's last and greatest sacrificeThen he amused her for an hour, and was much interested in all her trialsBut when he came to go, Amy held him back to whisper with trembling lips, "Is balenciaga giant bag there really any danger about Beth?"
"I'm afraid there is, but we must hope for the best, so don't cry, dear And Laurie put his arm about her with a brotherly gesture which was very comforting
When he had gone, she went to her little chapel, and sitting in the twilight, prayed for Beth, with streaming tears and an aching heart, feeling that a million turquoise rings would not console her for the loss of her gentle little sister
CHAPTER TWENTY

I don't think I have any words in which to tell the meeting of the mother and daughtersSuch hours are beautiful to live, but very hard to describe, so I will leave it to the imagination of my readers, merely saying that the house was full of genuine happiness, and that Meg's tender hope was realized, for when Beth woke from that long, healing sleep, the first objects on which her eyes fell were the little rose and Mother's faceToo weak to wonder at anything, she only smiled and nestled close in the loving arms about her, feeling that the hungry longing was satisfied at lastThen she slept again, and the girls waited upon their mother, for she would not unclasp the thin hand which clung to hers even in sleep
Hannah had `dished up' and astonishing breakfast for the traveler, finding it impossible to vent her excitement in any other way, and Meg and Jo fed their mother like dutiful young storks, while they listened to her whispered account of omega automatic geneve Father's state, MrBrooke's promise to stay and nurse him, the delays which the storm occasioned on the homeward journey, and the unspeakable comfort Laurie's hopeful face had given her when she arrived, worn out with fatigue, anxiety, and cold

What a strange yet pleasant day that wasSo brilliant and gay without, for all the world seemed abroad to welcome the first snowSo quiet and reposeful within, for everyone slept, spent with watching, and a Sabbath stillness reigned through the house, while nodding Hannah mounted guard at the doorWith a blissful sense of burdens lifted off, Meg and Jo closed their weary eyes, and lay at rest, like storm-beaten boats safe at anchor in a quiet harborMarch would not leave Beth's side, but rested in the big chair, waking often to look at, touch, and brood over her child, like a miser over some recovered treasureLaurie meanwhile posted off to comfort Amy, and told his story so well that Aunt March actually `sniffed' herself, and never once said "I told you so"Amy came out so strong on this occasion that I think the good thoughts in the little chapel really began to bear fruitShe dried her tears quickly, restrained her impatience to see her mother, and never even thought of the turquoise ring, when the old lady heartily agreed in Laurie's opinion, that she behaved `like a capital little woman'Even Polly seemed impressed, for he called her a good girl, vintage omega watches blessed her buttons, and begged her to "come and take a walk, dear", in his most affable toneShe would very gladly have gone out to enjoy the bright wintry weather, but discovering that Laurie was dropping with sleep in spite of manful efforts to conceal the fact, she persuaded him to rest on the sofa, while she wrote a note to her motherShe was a long time about it, and when she returned, he was stretched out with both arms under his head, sound asleep, while Aunt March had pulled down the curtains and sat doing nothing in an unusual fit of benignity
After a while, they began to think he was not going to wake up till night, and I'm not sure that he would, had he not been effectually roused by Amy's cry of joy at sight of her mother
There probably were a good many happy little girls in and about the city that day, but it is my private opinion that Amy was the happiest of all, when she sat in her mother's lap and told her trials, receiving consolation and compensation in the shape of approving smiles and fond caressesThey were alone together in the chapel, to which her mother did not object when its purpose was explained to her

"On the contrary, I like it very much, dear," looking from the dusty rosary to the well-worn little book, and the lovely picture with its garland of evergreen"It is an excellent plan to have some place where we can go to be quiet, when things vex or grieve chanel devil wears prada necklace u

Weasley looked around and said, "I can't make it grow back, not when it's been removed by Dark MagicBut it could've been so much worse
"Did I hear someone else in the yard?" Ginny asked
"Hermione and Kingsley," said Harry
"Thank goodness," Ginny whisperedThey looked at each other; Harry wanted to hug her, hold on to her; he did not even care much that MrsWeasley was there, but before he could act on the impulse, there was a great crash from the kitchen
"I'll prove who I am, Kingsley, after I've seen my son, now back off if you know what's good for you!"
Harry had never heard MrWeasley shout like that beforeHe burst into the living room, his bald patch gleaming with sweat, his spectacles askew, Fred right behind him, both pale but uninjured
"Arthur!" d

Malfoy fell backward on top of the Death Eater,...
Malfoy fell backward on top of the Death Eater, his mouth bleeding, utterly bemused"And that's the second time we've saved your life tonight, you two- faced bastard!" Ron yelledThere were more duelers all over the stairs and in the hallDeath Eaters everywhere Harry looked: Yaxley, close to the front doors, in combat with Flitwick, a masked Death Eater dueling Kingsley right beside themStudents ran in every direction; some carrying or dragging injured friendsHarry directed a Stunnning Spell toward the masked Death Eater; it missed but nearly hit Neville, who had emerged from nowhere brandishing armfuls of Venomous Tentacula, which looped itself happily around the nearest Death Eater and began reeling him inHarry, Ron, and Hermione sped won the marble staircase: glass shattered on the left, and the Slytherin hourglass that had recorded House points spilled its emeralds everywhere, so that people slipped and staggered as they ranTwo bodies fell from the balcony overhead as they reached the ground a gray blur that Harry took for an animal sped four-legged across the hall to sink its teeth into one of the fallen"NO!" shrieked Hermione, and with a deafening blast from her wand, Fenrir Greyback was thrown backward from the feebly struggling body of Lavender BrownHe hit the marble banisters and struggled to return to his feetThen, with a bright white flash and a crack, a crystal ball fell on top of his head, and he crumpled to the ground and did not move"I borse replica have more!" shrieked Professor Trelawney from over the banisters"More for any who want them! Here\a150\a150" And with a move likea tennis serve, she heaved another enormous crystal sphere from her bag, waved her wand through the air, and caused the ball to speed across the hall and smash through a windowAt the same moment, the heavy wooden front doors burst open, and more of the gigantic spiders forced their way into the front hallScreams of terror rent the air: the fighters scattered, Death Eaters and Hogwartians alike, and red and green jets of light flew
into the midst of the oncoming monsters, which shuddered and reared, more terrifying than ever"How do we get out?" yelled ron over all the screaming, but before either Harry or Hermione could answer they were bowled aside; Hagrid had come thundering down the stairs, brandishing his flowery pink umbrella"Don't hurt 'em, don't hurt 'em!" he yelled"HAGRID, NO!" Harry forgot everything else: he sprinted out from under the cloak, running bent double to avoid the curses illuminating the whole hall"HAGRID, COME BACK!" But he was not even halfway to Hagrid when he saw it happen: Hagrid vanished amongst the spiders, and with a great scurrying, a foul swarming movement, they retreated under the onslaught of spells, Hagrid buried in their midst"HAGRID!" Harry heard someone calling his own name, whether friend or foe he did not care: He was springint down the front steps into the dark grounds, and the omega ladies watch spiders were swarming away with their prey, and he could see nothing of Hagrid at all"HAGRID!" He thought he could make out an enormous arm waving from the mdist of the spider swarm, but as he made to chase after them, his way was impeded by a monumental foot, which swung down out of the darkness and made the ground on which he stood shudderHe looked up: A giant stood before him, twenty feet high, its head ihidden in shadow, nothing but its treelike, hairy shins illuminated by light from the castle doorsWith one brutal, fluid movement, it smashed a massive fist through an upper window, and glass rained down upon Harryk, forcing him back under the shelter of the doorway"Oh my\a150\a150!" shrieked Hermione, as she and ron caught up with Harry and gazed upward at the giant now trying to seize people through the window above"DON'T!" ron yelled, grabbing Hermione's hand as she raised her wand"Stun him and he'll crush half the castle\a150\a150" "HAGGER?" Grawp came lurching around the corner of the castle; only dnow did Harry realzie that Grawp was, indeed, an undersized giantThe gargantuan monster trying to crush people on the upper floors turned around and let out a rorarThe stone steps tremebled as he stomped toward his smaller kin, and Grawp's lopsided mouth fell open, showing yellow, half brick-sized teeth; and then they launched themselves at each other with the savagery of lions"RUN!" Harry roared; the ngiht was full of hideous yells and blows as the white chanel purse giants wrestled, and he seized Hermione's hand and tore down the steps into the grounds, Ron bringing up the rearHarry had not lost hope of finding and saving Hagrid; he ran so fast that they
were halfway toward the forest before they were brought up short againThe air around them had frozen: Harry's breath caught and solidified in his chestShapes moved out in the darkness, swirling figures of concentrated blackness, moving in a great wave towards the castles, their faces hooded and their breath rattlingron and Hermione closed in beside him as the sounds of fighting behind them grew suddenly muted, deadened, because a silence only dementors could bring was falling thickly through the night, and Fred was gone, and Hagrid was suurely dying or already dead"come on, Harry!" said Hermione's voice from a very long way away"Patronuses, Harry, come on!" he raised his wand, but a dull hopelessness was spreading throughout him: How many more lay dead that he did not yet know about? He felt as though his soul had already half left his body"HARRY, COME ON!" screamed HermioneA hundred dementors were advancing, gliding toward them, sucking their way closer to Harry's despair, which was like a promise of a feastHe saw Ron's silver terrier burst into the air, flicker feebly, and expire; he saw Hermione's otter twist in midair and fade, and his own wand trembled in his hand, and he almost welcomed the oncoming oblivion, the promise of nothing, of no feelingAnd then gucci pantheon a silver hare, a boar, and fox soared past Harry, Ron, and Hermione's heads: the dementors fell back before the creatures' approachThree more people had arrived out of the darkness to stand beside them, their wands outstretched, continuing to cast Patronuses: Luna, Ernie, and Seamus"That's right," said Luna encouragingly, as if they were back in the Room of Requirement and this was simply spell practice for the D "That's right, Harryome on think of something happy 'something happy?" he said, his voice cracked"We're all still here," she whispered, "we;re still fighting There was a silver spark, then a wavering light, and then, with the greatest effort it had ever cost him the stag burst from the end of Harry's wandIt cantered forward, and now the dementors scattered in earnest, and immediately the night was mild again, but the sounds of the surrounding battle were loud in his ears"Can't thank you enough," said ron shakily, turning to Luna, Ernie, and Seamus "you just saved\a150\a150" With a roar and an earth-quaking tremor, another giant came lurching out of the darkness from the direction of the forest, brandishing a club taller than any of them"RUN!" Harry shouted again, but the others needed no telling; They all scattered, and not a second too soon, for the next moment the
creature's vast foot had fallen exactly where they had been standingHarry looked round: ron and Hermione were following him, but the other three had vanished back into the picasso cartier battl
